The heart of the house - How to design a room online

November 21, 20224 min read

“What would you call a space like this, Debby?” … “And you, Giò?”.”

8 Reasons

As soon as Eva applied for “Your Home in a Click” design, we had a number of concerns; there were a lot of requirements in a challenging space.

“What would you call a space like this, Debby?” … “And you, Giò?”

It is not a room; it is not a passage ... it is a hybrid space that pulsates with activity, "a heart." We knew it had to be valued and given its meaning.

The “room” as is

This space connects the living/dining room with the bedrooms. The space has two large passages; on the left, we find a bedroom door, and on the right, a large window overlooking the laundry room. There is a desk and a sofa bed, a bookcase, and several other small items.

The floor is dark, porcelain look-alike wood. All the walls are white.

Challenges

Most people call them limitations; for us, they are challenges

Some “challenges” were the irregular walls. Eva thought that the only way to deal with them was to design expensive custom-made furniture.

The walls are divided by many openings: the door, the window, and the passage to the other bedrooms.

The passage between the living room and bedrooms limited our use of all the walls since people would be coming in and out of the room.

Interior design concept

Eva’s desires

Eva wanted maximum storage. Her family used the sofa regularly and wanted to have the ability to convert it to a bed when guests slept over. Additionally, she wanted to use the room as a convenient space for ironing and folding laundry. Lastly, she wanted to use the space as a small workspace from home.

Our proposal

The environment had to be reorganized to allow us to make it as functional as possible.

We created a large walk-in closet on the left wall that would not interfere with anyone walking in and out of the room, unlike the desk and the chair. (Wall B)

We placed a bookcase and a large desk in the corner next to the laundry. (Wall C)

Since the workspace is close to the laundry room, Eva can conveniently use the removable part of the Malm desk to fold laundry and easily store it under the desk afterward.

Eva can use the window to run the laundry through it. In addition, the position of the desk in the corner allows more privacy to the work area than before.

Since this is the first wall you see when entering this room, we chose to give it character and personality by selecting an antique pink color that worked harmoniously with the rest of the house.

The irregular wall, on the other hand, has been lengthened with semi-transparent panels. In addition, we added small shelves and a touch of color to highlight the sofa bed, already present in the room, but which was initially positioned on the opposite wall.

We solved all of Eva’s requirements, and we turned the space to more usable and well organized.

Design proposal for a muntifunctional spaceA suggestion for ikeas closet

The following is a synthesis of all of Eva’s requirements and how we fulfilled them

"I need maximum storage"

The Ikea Platsa system has an incredible amount of storage room; she can put coats, clothes, shoes, cleaning stuff, and whatever else she needs.

We designed it with the following configurations in mind for the different modules:

· First module was for coats, shoes, and hats.

· Second module is for linens.

· Third module is for the ironing implements.

“I would like to have a convenient space for ironing and folding laundry.”

There is room for the ironing table in the Platsa system, and she can fold the laundry in the removable part of the Malm desk.

The Malm desk is near the window of the laundry room to run the laundry through the window.

“I need a functional storage space, including bookshelves.”

On the wall in front of the sofa, you have a Billy bookcase and some shelves.

And finally, a comfortable mirror ensures you always leave the house looking your best.

“I would like the ability to open the sofa when guests are sleeping at us.”

In the front wall (wall A), which was the most jagged and anonymous, we decided to give a strong touch by inserting filter elements to lengthen the wall.

They allow us to place the sofa bed there and enhance the wall with an antique pink band and small shelves (to store photos, objects, and magazines).

This change creates a textured wall with character but at the same time offers a more linear look.

“I need a small work from home space.”

The Malm desk and the shelves above it create a very functional and comfortable working space.

The desk placed in this position will have more privacy than before; in our opinion, it was too much of a passage area.

All the furniture is white. However, we gave a touch of color with a delicate pink tone throughout the space that gives it a chic touch that fits the design of the living room and adds character to the entire area.
